The 2003 and maybe the 2004 had PVC and vent at the rear of the valve covers. Later years were toward the front.

Sounds like maybe there was some contamination in the fluid that took out the 2nd pump. Maybe flush it a couple of times with the new pump.

Plenty of positives changing from 3.07 to 3.55, but a downside is you chew through back tires pretty quickly during spirited street driving.
