Crappy Engineering, Door Window Hardware (PLASTIC)

Over the last few days, I have been hearing something rolling around in my passenger door which had just had new clips to make the creaking stop in the door panel. I elected to take the panel off myself (I ordered my own clips jic) and found this broken female nut (plastic) that attaches the window to the regulator. Even worse, you need to replace the entire window to get these parts. WTF? Anyway, after speaking to Andy (who has had a rash of these break on 13's, he was able to explain to the "Big guys" that warrantying windows because there is no part number available for the plastic nut is a total waste of time and money. He did convince them to send him some to make repairs on his Vipers in for service, and Andy told me he will try to get me 2 for me. Yes, my other one broke at the same time as I was moving the window up and down to try to figure out what was going on. Pathetic!

In the age of 3D printing, this should be an easy upgrade/repair!

Window regulators and cheap parts associated have been plaguing these cars since at least 03. I NEVER use the auto-up or down function, I just carefully lower the windows a little at a time. Much less stressful on already cheap parts. I know we shouldn't have to , but it is what it is. When these cars go out of warranty it gets real pricey!

This part has nothing to do with the regulator. This cheap part only comes intalled on the window glass, so when they break like mine did, your SOL. The only option is to have your door glass replaced. There is no other way (for now) to get the plastic nut. Hopefully Andy from Viper Exchange can get me a set or I'm off to the dealership to fight with them on getting a new piece of glass installed. I also will have to pay again to get that window re tinted. Such a problem for a six figure car.

Thanks for the clarification. Yet another thing to watch out for...I agree, for this level (or really any level) a stupid design.

Yep, that 25 cent plastic part broke like it did on mine.

It makes one wonder how many thousands of windows Chrysler has replaced that use this cheap design. Looks like it would not be something unique to a Viper. No wonder they had to declare bankruptcy.

I wonder too. But, 7 years with my 07 SRT8 Charger, and 3 years with my 13 Dart, and no issue at all. So maybe they don't all use the same design?

Funny you post this. I've been hearing a rattle in my door too. It's at the dealership now. I wonder if they will find the same problem.

Or maybe someone with metal working experience and a lathe could make one out of aluminum. Just as lite and also stronger. It reminds me of the pop-up headlights on Corvettes that failed because of the plastic gears that people replaced with a brass fabricated piece. I guess it all comes down to money and the shortsightedness of the manufacturer.

How do these interface / attach to the window?

Would be happy to try to make them if I could get one in hand.

Mine broke last week. Dealer replaced the window, regulator and the cable for the door handle. The cable was my fault as when I closed the door with the panel off I accidentally pinched the cable. Now it has an appointment tomorrow to get the tint done on the new glass as the dealer doesn't carry Wincos tint.

I'm very surprised that someone with an engineering degree designed this plastic circle. It's common sense with multiple ups and downs as well as the flexing of the glass pushing on and off this plastic wheel with a little force that it will fail. It's plastic for gosh sakes! I am using some home depot parts for now because I have my window tinted and dont want my dealer to replace the glass. I hope they start selling this part soon!!!!

This is like Gen 3/4 all over again - except this time the regulators haven't had a chance to fail, because this part breaks first. I never use the auto up or down function in the Viper, I always just open and close a little at a time. Don't know if that does any good or not. I wonder if my Ram uses the same crappy part? I'm on the Ram forums, and no window complaints over there...

I had the regulator problems on my '06 coupe and now I've had BOTH passenger and driver side parts and glass replaced on my '13. At least the recent ones were under warranty!

Should be really easy to scan and have 3D printed in metal.
