Nurburgring Re Do or Local Events it s up to you

Good News Everybody: I’m happy to announce that Viper Nurburgring Record, the company that funded the effort to be the Ring King, has settled its litigation involving a car dealer who copied and used the copyrighted photographs without a license (definitely NOT Viper Exchange or BJ Motors). After a federal court judge ruled in VNR’s favor on its copyright infringement claims, we reached a favorable settlement in the amount of $280,000. After litigation expenses and taxes, the proceeds from the litigation will be approximately $100,000. Since I organized the original event for the Viper community, I want to use the money to benefit the Viper community. I am asking for your suggestions as to how to further the interests of Viper lovers with this money. Specifically, should VNR put the money towards funding another trip back to The Ring or use the money on local and regional Viper events across the country?

Another trip back to the Ring would be awesome, but the weakest link is the shyte Kumho front tires so I won't expect much of difference in terms of them blowing out, etc. However, a sub 7 minute time would be a good one to have for posterity :-)

Russ - Cheers to you for bringing this to everyone's attention and asking for input!!

I'd love to see a sub 7 minute time, but we know how incredibly hard that is, even with a budget 5x that much. I'm curious to see what the members have to say.

Well as the Viper is not in production anymore, and therefore is not restricted by the old "production car record" mantra, why not simply showcase what this car platform can actually do in a guise that many of us have optimised and use on track anyway ie in 9L form along with either Hoosier or Michelin/Pirelli slicks? Manthey posted their 991 RS record lap of 6:40 and that was under the "modified" cars records. I mean at the end of the day the production car record doesn't apply to a car thats not in production anymore right? Just my 2 cents...

And to add to this, given that it would actually be a titled car and several years old, I have to assume that there would be a tremendous amount of scrutiny and skepticism from the track world on whether the car was actually stock.

Throw the kitchen sink at it for mods and go for fastest possible ring lap. Getting a car and the logistics might be the hardest part next to funding. Would be willing to help out again however possible.

Don't bother unless you plan on using PS Cup 2. The Kumhos will not last one good lap.

Nurburgring Part Deux! Maybe one lap with high performance street tires and another lap with Michelin or Pirelli racing slicks (as Stradman suggested) to see the difference in lap times. That would be awesome.

I would say use the cash for other Viper Events. But Thanks Russ for the Journey so far, it was an epic tale and the team can be proud of what they achieved.

An all out run with a modded Viper would be cool. The question then becomes do you stick with the ACR-E or go with the ACR to pick up some time on the long straight?

I think you guys are thinking in the right direction. What are your feelings about an asterisk next to our time for using 18" wheels up front with different tires rather than the OEMs? Also, just so that you know, it would be quite a bit more expensive to change to a set of slicks. Each time you change the tires, it's an entirely new setup that takes a day or two to dial in. We would disclose that we put 18" wheels up front and tires that are not OEM (but could still be street tires).

From the comfort of my sofa:
Back to the "Ring". Go for sub 7 minutes. Completely stock ACR with best possible tyres (whatever that is).

I concur with the thought of being modified. Use a 9L with slicks (wheel size optimized) to show the potential. A stock record 3 years after production ended would have an asterisk anyway.

I think you will be hard pressed not to find any current Viper owner that wouldn't want to see unlimited resources go towards improving on the lap times however I feel that the real focus would be better suited on how to bring renewed interest from outside our current Viper community and also the next generation owners. The hype, the achievement and the PR of what was achieved originally set the world on fire about what the Viper was capable of and yes it exposed some vulnerable areas however going back and trying to improve on that will probably only excite our own Viper community but likely not foster the major buzz we would anticipate given its lack of production any longer and changes to some of our competitions platforms.

I would suggest using the money on local and regional Viper events across the country as we need to continue to build that renewed interest. These cars will have to go somewhere as we all will not be around forever.

The Viper has unfinished business at the Ring. Ideally it would be great to see what it would run bone stock with MPSC 2' or what ever is the best performance tire out now that would be much safer than running the Kumho's again.

Really appreciate Kumho for developing a great tire for the shorter tracks around the world, but for the Ring its not suited for that abuse.

I think a stock time on better tires would be more significant than a modified 9L time "if you can only do one". Would be great to do both. A 9L run and a stock run with Trofeos or MPSC 2's etc.

Would be nice to get Lance Arnold again. Impressive that he was able to go faster than Dom and Luca on his first drive. The man knows the Ring but I doubt he will do it if the car is on Kumho's.

I vote use the money to build the legend. "Build it and they will come"

Heres a thought. Would the non-extreme ACR be better suited to achieve the sub 7 min run? We know the Extreme can dip below 7 mins given proper tires but it will still lose a ton of time on the long straights. The non extreme may be the better choice?

Yes x10... I agree. By the time this happens it would be over 3 years past production and probably scrutinized anyhow. I think optimizing a STOCK ACR, but doing a DOT tire run would be the absolute best. Showcase what the former production is capable of with just TIRES. That would speak volumes! Any one-off car can be R&D'd to the moon and set a record not many will car about or even realize happened. End game. This is what an ACR can STILL do!

If it were up to me, I would bring a ACR and a TA 2.0 with newer tires and no mods. Have a 3rd party inspect the car while at the ring while on a lift to verify stock exhaust etc. Have them take pictures the day of the runs, before and after. If the car has stock cats and manifolds, engine modifications aren't going to help much with the restriction and heat. I would also bring a couple of cars with some mileage on them (engine fully broke in) and install new transmissions and diffs before the runs. People would want to put an asterisk beside the run (tires) but it would be nice to see what a stock production car with a 6spd and updated tires could do. For the sake of argument, you could install the best tires that were available in 2017 to show what the car could have done with what was available at the time (what the competition was running). I would also find out when Porsche did the record run with the GT2. The Ring is in Porsche's backyard, they know what time of year and time of day to set a record. I can only imagine what was learned from the last Viper Record Run attempt.

I'm surprised nobody's suggested a raffle car yet. I don't know if previous raffles actually generated money or not, but a well advertised one might bring in new members and also be cash-flow positive. Now that the car is out of production, I'd be thinking that generating new paying members and getting people to renew would be a serious consideration.

Back to the ring, I second the notion of using a car with less aero and better/ newer tires. MPSC 2’s would be my choice. Khumo is why the last attempt went south. Don’t go back with the same equipment expecting a different result.

I’d like to see what a Viper can do with the best tires available. It would be interesting to see what a 9L or even a heads and cam car can do there.

Don't see 100k even touching the amount needed to go back. Not sure what else could be done with the funds. What ever you guys decide will be cool for sure.
