    Gen 5 Originally From Canada

    Hello all,

I am looking to purchase a gen 5. I have no experience with vipers other than consistently reading and researching on the forum. I recently sold my 94 Mazda Rx7 that I had owned for 12 years. It was a fun car making 500whp but I was just ready for something different. If you know anything about Rx7's or rotary engines, you know how much money it takes to keep them running and the many issued involved.

Anyway, I found a 2014 GTS with 11k miles that was posted and price wise appears to be a very good deal at first glance but I have reservations. It was originally a Canadian car and then according to Carfax was purchased, imported and owned in Nebraska in 2017. It shows that it was declared to meet US highway safety specifications by US Dept. of Transportation. I found one other thread about the actual importing process from Canada which I don't need to worry about at this point since it's already done and it mentioned that the manufacturers warranty would not be valid in US. Obviously the original factory warranty is expired by now anyway. I'm not familiar with the ins and outs of how warranty's work on these either. I have seen postings about how the vipers are hit or miss with minor to major issues. The other thing I don't know is if the R28 & R29 recalls were performed. If not how would I go about checking on that before purchase? The car is at a dealership but not a Dodge/Chrysler dealer.

Also the speedometer is in Kilometers, is there a way to change it to Mph since it is digital or is that not how that works?

What is your advice on purchasing a car such as this one?

    Thanks in advance.

Was probably assembled in an igloo. After all, it is from Canada, right?

The digital dash is easily switched between kilometres and miles.

And as you’ve pointed out already, all the headache associated with the import has already been taken care of. What exactly is your concern?

^^^ Agree with this. Since you're out of warranty any way, if the car is sound, then you are essentially in the exact same position as anyone purchasing a US model of similar vintage. Of course, verifying that it is a sound car is the key. So, I suggest having a Viper tech go through it and make sure it is everything that you want it to be.

I considered purchasing a Canadian car last year but it was such a hassle that I decided against it. The price wasn't much better than comparable US models and once I factored in the cost of transporting it and importing into the US, it was way above the US market prices. My main concern was that I got such huge discrepancies in import quotes. The importing process seems like a shady business and it doesn't help that there isn't a review system to weed out any non-reputable companies. Maybe you will have much better luck...

The recalls would have had to be performed so it can be imported into the USA. Otherwise it would have been inadmissible.

That doesn't seem like a steal price. I'd definitely wait as there were a lot of GTS for sale last year with similar mileage and condition for the same price or just a little more, and those included the 10yr/100k powertrain warranty from Dodge. That warranty alone is worth it to me to stay away from a Canadian car.

You would have to check with FCA dealer personnel or a person with access to the FCA system to be certain of what that system shows as warranty status. However, there is an online FCA tool that shows status as a quick unofficial check.

I looked, and that 2014 VIN does not show R28 as applicable; but does show R29 as complete. I checked a different Canadian car that I had been following, and that 2013 shows R28 as applicable but incomplete.

So, the car you are asking about has the same status with regards to R28 as other 2014 cars built for the US or Canadian market which were not part of the R28 campaign. (Note: Not all 2013 and 2014 cars were subject to R28 )

Drop me the Vin number and I will look it up today or tomorrow ( depending on when I get the info). Need Vin and mileage, but the other thing I will let you know is if it was a US model you could get an Extended Service Contract on the Snake. Since it is a Canadian version , as silly as it sounds, it is considered Gray Market and this can not be applied for.
