    I think it's an inertia switch for the airbag/safety system?

    Doug is correct. The Factory tends to do a not so good job of routing the wires under the seat and that part will pull out or the wires will pull out of the connector

    Ohh... ok, So I can just leave it lying on the floor under my new seat?

    EDIT: or is it an inductive sensor so I need to keep it away from metal?

    Yes, when It senses steel that is indicating full forward position as installed from the factory.

    No, there is a slot in the front of the right seat support that it goes into.

    Yes, but I have replaced the stock seat with a OMP one.
