My wife has a 2010 convertible and she likes it very much. Hers has the A/T and we haven’t had any problems so far. From what I’ve read the “S” is the one you want, ours requires premium gas which may be a deterrent (28mpg mostly city). Engine life is dependent on how it was maintained and at 116K that’s not a lot of mileage for a modern engine. Being your daughter and how she plans on using it (around town or highway) the crash tests may be a consideration. We know two other people that have Minis and there experience has been positive also, one even uses regular gas which would scare me. We don’t use ours in the winter but one of the people we know does and they are satisfied with how it handles. Weather it’s true or not I’ve herd you need to run them on the highway once in a while or they may have problems.
Hope this helps

I don’t anything about Mini Coopers but I may need a car for my college aged kid too so I just took a look. When I look at used cars, I go to ebay and look at the sold listings and see the highest mileage examples that are actually sold. Seems like there are a lot of high mileage examples that people are buying. More than I would have thought.
Personally, I’d prefer to get my daughter something a little bigger and AWD like a compact SUV because she seems to find a lot of pot holes and parking curbs for some reason.

Don’t know much but we are replacing a 06 engine with over 100K currently in our shop. Driven by a women who didn’t really take care of it I assume. My friend has a new one, likes it okay. She trades a lot. Is getting a Renegade when she gets back from deployment.

I don’t see any reason to get the Cooper version for anyone that isn’t a driving enthusiast. Why add in the extra stress and possible repair expense of a supercharger? Of course, if your daughter is wanting it for running canyons and such rather than just commuting to school, then, more power to her !

Biggest selling points for the Mini are that it is cute, and it is a BMW. Mostly status symbols.
It does not get great mileage, costs more than other compact cars, has horrible reliability scores, does not handle well with lots of torque steer.
The automatic is a horrible constant velocity type, instrumentation is centered in a pod in the middle of the dash, and hard to read at a glance.
It rides poorly on the freeway and tends to be loud also. Repairs tend to be more expensive than the asian econoboxes.

Thanks guys! I appreciate all the responses very much. The more I searched the more negatives I found vs. positives for the intended purpose. She liked it because it was cute and tiny….she’s only 4’11” and 90 pounds. I went and drove it and it was like driving a go kart with no insulation….granted I’m pretty spoiled with my other cars I suppose but I didn’t care for it although it did seem to corner decent and the power surprised me. I can see the attraction to them because I think it would make for a fun weekend car.
I’m picking up her car tomorrow. I found a 2010 Chevy Cobalt LT 2 door with 53,000 miles on it for $4,200 so I can’t pass that up. It got struck by a deer so it had some front end damage but I looked at the pictures after the accident and it didn’t appear to bad. The repairs seem to have been done very well…no frame damage and no airbag deployment. It drives and rides great and even has remote start!! Can’t really beat it for the price/year/miles. Gonna surprise her with it tomorrow afternoon. Hell it even has a spoiler and racing stripes!!! 🙂

I know some people who are extremely happy with the new fiat. Of course much more expensive still due to just being newer.
Congratulations and best of luck.

I need a better car for my daughter to drive around while she’s in college. She’s got a beater ’96 Accord now that nothing works on so we’ve been shopping around for cheap cars. She like the Mini Coopers and I found this one. https://desmoines.craigslist.org/ctd/5613885219.html
It looks good but I don’t know anything about them. At 116,000 miles does it have much left in it? If it was a Toyota or a Honda I wouldn’t worry much at those miles if the car had been taken care of.
Any help would be appreciated.
