I bypassed mine because the switch malfunctioned in the middle of an important trip. I believe they epitomise a nanny state of protection which has crept into car production.
I disconnected the switch and inserted a small piece of wire into the part which feeds into the engine loom. In that way, I fool the system that I have the clutch depressed. No current draw, so no issues with the battery.
If you are confident that you will not start the car in gear, I recommend doing what I have done. If you need the extra safety, replace the switch. I believe it is the same part fitted to Jeeps, so any dealer will have readily available one.
