Sounds like you need the resistor too. My fan stopped working and smoke started coming out the cabin vents 2 weeks into ownership. Thanks to forum advice I bought a new fan motor and resistor, easy to change with a little bodily contortion.
see my post here
the resistor is the same part number (5014212AA) as a 2000-04 Jeep cherokee, blower motor is part no (5093248AB)
my fan motor was full of water, see below for temporary solution to stop it happening again, which is still on my ‘to do’ list for winter
Whilst awaiting the parts I decided to do a hosepipe test on the windscreen, and as suspected, water was getting into the hole above where the blower motor sits. I removed wipers, vents and the fresh air intake plenum to investigate further.
Upon removal, it seems water can creep under the intake plenum, and there is only a thin sponge gasket to stop moisture getting into the car. Obviously a design flaw methinks.
To prevent this I decided to make a small dam with a bead of silicone, to direct water away from the blower motor hole. Not pretty, but it is hidden. I waited overnight for it to dry so the plenum didn’t stick to the car and make it hard to remove in future.
Early tests indicate that the problem is solved
pic 1 and 2 are before/after the silicone was applied

Yep, its the resistor.

I performed the above modification on my car as well after I replaced the blower motor. My motor had a bit of a squeaky squeak noise and it was a bit corroded as shown above too. So hopefully that mod keeps the water out.

Wow! Thanks guys. I knew I was missing something! I was so flustered as to why it wasn’t working I totally looked past this!
Thanks again. I’ll replace the resistor and report back.

Stumped a little bit. My blower motor was whining and finally gave up. I tossed in another and still no luck. The old motor was pretty well seized up while the new one spins freely. I’m no longer getting power to the motor itself. In the time frame of the car sitting around and swapping the blower motor it popped a fuse under the hood. I changed this fuse and still nothing.
Any suggestions what to check? The blend seems to be working, panel is lighting up and controls seem to be working properly however I have not yet removed them to check power coming out.
Any tips and help is greatly appreciated before I start digging into it!
