I’m really hoping that Beth Sewell our local President throws her hat in the ring for this. I know that she was very interested in running for National President this last time around and I think she would make a FANTASTIC addition to the VOA leadership team. I have worked with Beth and her Husband Richard on our local board for the last 4 years and have known them for a lot longer than that. Her and I devote a ton of time running our local club and I think her work ethic and passion for Viper would be a great asset to our community.

      Here goes!

      Hello fellow officers!

I would like to be considered for the VP position per this thread so here’s a bit about me.

A little about me: I bought my first roadster in 2008 despite Richard telling me to look at a Vette -I told him no! I had no idea what “sub-culture” i was getting into when I jointed the Houston Region but we’ve found that Viper owners are the best people on the planet and we’ve made a lot of really good friends through the club. I tracked the roadster extensively and got fast enough to start scaring myself so I bought an ‘08 ACR that was converted to an X which is still my track car. I drove the ’08 roadster to NVE1 and when Ben and Bernie rolled out the Medusa i knew I had to have one so within 30 minutes I committed to Medusa #1 and took delivery in October 2014. Yes I’m one of those “crazy people” that name their cars: ’08 roadster is Ruby Begonia, ’08 converted ACR-X is Sam and Medusa #1 is Norma Jean!

Prior car club positions: Many years ago I was a member of the Lone Star Region of the Porsche club and Richard and I held the position of editors of the Porschenaut (local region magazine) for 2 years and then I had to sell my 928 because baby car seats didn’t fit! I was out of sports cars until I bought the ‘08 roaster and joined the club. I was the Houston Region’s Secretary-Treasurer from 2011 through 2014, Secretary through 12/31/15 and elected President as of 1/1/16. Richard was the previous President through 12/31/15 when I beat him by 1 vote! We worked together to build the Houston Region from a fairly dormant one coming out of the dual club dust up to where we are today – a group of very active members with lots of events. We are very proud of where our region is and I look forward to continuing to be of service to the VOA.

Professional experience: I have owned several different small businesses since 1984 and am comfortable in all facets of business operations. Furthermore, I have served as board member, President and Treasurer for Dad’s Club Swim Team, Inc., a multi-million dollar non-profit organization from 2001 through 2014. The membership tripled during my tenure and we rolled out many different services to appeal to a broader base of customers. The President and I resigned in 2014 due to a different vision than the incoming board members held and to pursue other interests – predominately VIPERS!

Why am I interested in the position: I believe I can help Alex and the other officers in many ways with the primary goal of building upon the outstanding platform established by the original officers. I’m organized, good at delegating, being delegated to, managing a variety of responsibilities and capable in event planning. My vision for the club is to help with the continuance of the paths already in force while maintaining the high ground and ultra-transparency our members want, all of which I believe will foster continued club growth.

Thank you all for your consideration of me as a candidate for this office.

      Beth

Hi everyone, just wanted to send a reminder that collection of names for those wishing to pursue the VP role ends in the next few days. I’ll be triggering a vote after that and will allow a couple weeks for people to complete their selection (I will be doing it via our portal – we’ve used it before).

While we’ve had inquiries from a number of people, Beth is the only one so far formally on the ballot. If she runs uncontested, I’ll still be issuing the vote for the sake for formality per the bylaws.

      Thanks everyone!

Hi everyone, just a reminder that I need those of you (regional presidents) who didn’t vote to please login and vote for the VP replacement I emailed a week ago. I see many haven’t logged in yet.

Please login and vote (Yes or abstain options). As part of the board I want to make sure you’re all notified well and reminded – but I need all to make the effort and participate (unless something truly precludes you).

Thank you to all those that I already see have voted. Thanks!

So as you’re all aware we have an open national Vice Presidents position (which is also of course a board member role). We agreed in our last board meeting that we want to have a 30 day period where candidates can consider the role and come forward (also gives them time to ask questions and have discussion). Then we’ll allow 2 weeks to do a vote which I will trigger via our DriveViper portal (no meeting necessary). The goal is to get this swiftly filled and completed before NVE2.

We’ve amended the bylaws at our last board meeting to allow for any past or present national or regional officer to fill this position (so basically anyone reading this forum). We have a big pool of qualified individuals across all of our many regions, and a few people have been contacting me and others and inquiring. I wanted to start a thread to give them the opportunity to come forward and introduce themselves as it’ll give us all time to have discussion and have visibility with who comes forward.

To help provide a general sense of the work the VP does, I’ve provided bulleted highlights below. Keep in mind that what’s important is having good judgment, being a good leader, working well with others, and the ability to manage the volume of work. However, if someone has a particular set of skills, or is lacking in another, we always have the ability to capitalize and balance them (for instance, my IT capability and large group project/leadership experience is where I tend to get leveraged). I’ve always been the type of person who believed that positions aren’t always simply filled, but we can build them around capabilities. In volunteer organizations, this holds very true. We can always help prop up weaknesses and capitalize on strengths. So don’t get hung up on one specific item you’re not sure you can do it, we’re in it together. And what’s most important is passion, because that’s what keeps you going at busy times! Love the people you work with, and love who you’re doing it for. And of course we want to keep in mind that any officer position should perhaps be used as a stepping stone to the presidency as it’s good prep.

Here is a cut paste from our national officer roles document, it outlines what is needed in a VP, what skills are helpful, and the typical time demands:

      VOA VICE PRESIDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
      • Oversee operations relative to call center (VOA HQ), website, forums, conf call system, etc…
      • Manage membership drive, renewal process, and member issues
      • Participate in regional development and resolve region conflicts when they arise. Ensure regions have active calendars.
      • Participate in recurring national officer discussion and decision making
      • Oversee special projects.
      • Stand in when president not available.
      • Attend and participate in board calls and meetings.
      • Lead/participate with workshops at biannual onsite board meetings.

      QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS
      • Able to lead large groups
      • Public speaking
      • Organized and expedient
      • Tactful and capable of mediating disputes
      • Event and contract negotiation

TYPICAL TIME COMMITMENT: Typically 2-4 hours a week (mainly email and member issues) with some extensive time needed during large events, problems, and planning.

So for those interested, feel free to post and introduce yourself. I suggest a brief comment about where you live, how long you’ve been a member, what roles you’ve served, and a little bit of personal info to help us get to know you better. Feel free to forward to other past/present regional officers and encourage them to consider it.

On small point of conditioning I make sure I impose. Elections force people to “pick”, this can sometimes cause feelings to be hurt and people to have preferences. We want to make sure we support ALL candidates who stake an interest in the role. And remember, it takes guts simply to consider and pursue these roles. They all deserve to be commended!

So let’s begin listing our candidates. If a candidate doesn’t have access to this forum (because they aren’t a current regional officer) you can post for them or send to me.

      Thanks everyone!
