My Gen 1 radio/tape deck is having issues. It’s actually had them as long as I’ve owned the car but since I don’t usually use the radio, it hasn’t been an issue. But my sons just got me a collection of cassettes for my birthday for the car and I’d like to play them. What is happening is, I’ll turn the radio on, it’ll play fine, then suddenly cut out. It’ll come back intermittently then cut off again. It sounds like a short to be honest, but I’ve check both amps in the trunk and all the connections seem secure. I just pulled the head unit and everything looks snug there as well. I don’t think it’d be the speakers since they all go and a short for a speaker would seem to just cut out that one. Thoughts?

I checked to see if the power was cutting out to the head unit when the music stopped but it doesn’t seem to. The display still show the radio station or the time, even when no music is playing.

Resource for servicing on the radio head unit is United Radio in East Syracuse, NY. I just sent the unit from my 92 in for service to have the cassette deck belts/bands replaced and an internal pre-amplifier issue diagnosed and fixed. contact@unitedradio.com or automotive@unitedradio.com
