The following is a basic guide, written by me. Do not take it as gospel, I am not responsible for any damage. Guys, feel free to add or correct from your own personal experience. Prior to starting, get some of that low tack green painters tape and tape the back edge fender ‘lips’. When the bumper top edge pops out it could scratch the lip. Try and guide it with your hand.
Coupe REAR FASCIA
REMOVAL
(1) Jack vehicle both sides, remove rear wheels. Remove the rear wheelhouse splash shields.
(2) Unplug the side marker lights
(3) Remove the nuts that attach the rear facia to the fender at the split line to the support bracket, directly above marker light (inside)
(4) Since car is in the air, remove complete diffuser assembly. Fasteners are pretty obvious. There is a metal stiffener iside the bumper that provides an anchor for the aft-most diffuser blade screws (and one bolt). It will fall out – no big deal.
(5) Open liftgate, remove tail light access covers. Remove single screw that attaches tab from fender to facia tail light surround (right on top). Unplug tail lights and turn/reverse lights.
(6)Remove tail lights (three plastic nuts) and set aside so they don’t get damaged. Leave turn signals till you get bumper off, they are held onto bumper tabs with metal clips that can be dificult to remove without damaging the tabs.
(7)Remove 6 push pins that hold top of facia to bumper support, located below license plate
(8) Remove single screw that holds quarter trim panel – look at tail light, where it curves and disappears into fender cavity, there is a screw. If you are only removing bumper and not fenders, you may have to remove the small panel completely. It is also quite possible that you can get enough flex in the fender now that it is separated from the bumper, and not have to remove the trim panel. Gently flex fender out and pull bumper in and down until tab that u-nut is attached to clears the quarter trim panel. When you are pulling down, the top of the tail light surround (which is tucked up into rear fender lip) should pop out. Note: if you are going to remove the small quarter trim panel, the back edge is secured with body tape to the inside of the fender. Sticks like shit to a blanket so be very careful not to damage anything. Replacement quarter trims are cheap, fenders are not.
(9) Carefully remove bumper. It is very flexible, much more so than the fenders. Keep in mind, paint has a flex agent that allows some movement, but it is not infinite. Did I mention be careful?? -
Greetings all. Is there a rear bumper removal write-up anywhere? A search didn’t really help at all. This is for a Gen III Coupe. Thanks!
