Rear hatch area is completely done, all hoses connected, wiring completed, everything bolted in place etc. All fluids were put in earlier this week to include about 7 gals of oil, might be some expensive oil changes in the future. The gas pedal has a toe lift installed, some tech inspections do look for that if you have throttle cables vs fly by wire. We are very close to starting up Dr Frankenstein’s monster and getting it on the dyno. I’m so ready for this moment.

2010 ACR-X crate engine. Has upgrades of gen 5 intake, Fidanza aluminum flywheel with ARP bolts, harness wrapped with Kool-mat insulation. I used this engine for the 2023 SVRA (Sportscar Vintage Racing Assoc.) racing season (6 races) , as I was having my original engine rebuilt. It had oil changed after every race weekend ( Red Line 15-50 racing oil ).  Car  has Accusump oil system , so it has NEVER been started without oil system pre primed. This motor runs perfect , it won me a championship last year with co driver Bobby Archer . Comes with custom shipping crate.  Phone calls preferred  936-788-4082 or jrv10motorsports@gmail.com    $18,000.

Hoses are all completed, fuel, oil, water, nitrous, scavenge pump, intercoolers and pumps, catch can, etc. Also battery cables and disconnect are completed. ProEFI wants to help us get to 275+ and has helped by sending a base tune and offered to assist with final tune when we are ready. Definitely excited to have the benefit of their experience. All the wiring for pumps and controls are coming up next. This thing is getting close to starting soon.

David – I just noticed the valve cover photos. These look to be machined from billet? They also appear taller than G3, more like Gen 1/2 with G3 oil filler hole location. What’s the reasoning behind this, other than the “cool factor”?

Title says it all. Just ordered four myself.

Blucifer progress is continuing, and Gearhead is working toward being able to start it soon. Here are some pictures of the catch can which is located in the rear of the car over the battery box. The Peterson oil tank will be vented into it along with the engine. Keeping it in the rear keeps any oil dumped into the tank that overflows out the catch can vent from getting under the tires.

    Hi, Bob:

Do you have a CEL ? If so, have you extracted the code(s) ? Access to OBD I code reader ?

My first stop would be checking all plug wire connections at plugs and coils.

Major grounds would be next…including battery to ground cable and battery ground cable to frame.

If no success, go after connectors at PCM, ICM, Crank sensor, cam sensor etc.

Hopefully, others will chime in with more suggestions.

By the way, check your email for a little help with the ground locations.

please excuse my ignorance, but i always thought that one of the main reasons for the viscosity recommended for a particular car was based on the clearances. so my concern is on a cold start, say with temps between 30 – 40 degrees at the lowest, how much longer does it take for the thicker oils to get to the vital areas? or is there no difference, unless your starting your viper at 0 degrees, which i don’t do.

<<i believe that if you change your oil often then it won’t matter which synthetic oil you use.>>

How often is “often”? If you only put sparing miles on the car and put 10 quarts of new oil and a filter in it every month, you certainly shouldn’t have problems.

<<my question is what viscosity? someone posted a conversation he had with Richard Winkles and he did not recommend the 0w-40, instead go with high mileage 10w-40, which he says is what he runs in his viper.>>

Dick lives in Michigan and lives and breathes Viper engines for 30 years. By all means, don’t take his advice.

I have used 0W-40 on all 3 of my Vipers. Gen III, IV and V  and have never had any issues. I have tracked them,  driven them in 90+ temps and below 40(but rarely)   I changed the oil once a year and put about 1,500 miles/year on the cars.

Dick designed the engine. He should know. But everyone has an opinion and also facts based on their use of their Vipers. I have two and have used Mobil 1 10w-30, Mobil 1 15w-50, Mobil 0w-40, Pennzoil 0w-40, Pennzoil 5w-40. I do not race, I live in the snow belt and I do not drive the cars below 40F or with salt on the roads. High temps here get into the low 90’s but not often. In my temperature range and usage, I cannot tell the difference. I do an oil analysis at each oil change.  I use Blackstone Labs. They can’t tell the difference either. Wear and contaminants are always in the same range and they always say I could have kept the oil in longer. Right now one has 5w-40, and the other has 15w-50 in it because I took it to a race shop for normal service and they said “that’s what we always use.” Based on my temperature range  think Dick is correct about the w weight, 10 is fine since I am not starting the car below 40F and actually 15 is fine too since the garage never gets below 55F.

Topic: oil viscosity in forum Gen V |

i saw a post on a Viper forum ‘ penzoil vs mobil1’ where viper owners commented on what they run in their car. i believe that if you change your oil often then it won’t matter which synthetic oil you use. my question is what viscosity? someone posted a conversation he had with Richard Winkles and he did not recommend the 0w-40, instead go with high mileage 10w-40, which he says is what he runs in his viper. does it depend where you live and how you drive it?  i live in virginia and i have no problem taking my viper out in 30 degree weather , provided no salt on roads, and in the summer, if its 95 degrees or higher i wont drive it. nor do i track the car, but i do get a little red line crazy sometimes. it’s not that i don’t trust Richard, it just feels like its a big jump in viscosity for me to take that leap. what viscosity do you guys use?

Trevor, as Vipers were becoming a little more common at track events in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s  there were some reports of oil filter issues…including with the Mopar 204 Mobil 204 which was sold as a Mopar performance product. The engineers who designed your engine decided that Vipers needed a more robust can and they came up with their own specs which changes based on the startup pressures these motors produce…as I recall said event.

The “White filter” you reference needs further definition since there are two “white” Viper oil filters.

For Gen I, II, and III Vipers the correct, Viper engineer recommended Mopar part number 05037836AB.  This covers all Vipers from 1992 through 2006.  NOTE: In your quest for this filter, be sure NOT to use the AA earlier version of this filter. The later AB version has a needed internal change.

Any CJDR dealership either has or can order this filter for you…somewhere around $15-20 apiece.
